Our valley
Our school and towns are located in the “Deba Gaoiena” valley. In this area, there are located Arrasate, Aretxabaleta,Leintz-Gatzaga, Bergara, Oñati, Eskoritaza, Antzuola. Beginning from the south, there is located Leintz-Gatzaga, a very small town in the country side, surrounded by many mountains. Next to it, there are Eskoriatza, Aretxabaleta and Arrasate. In the north part is Bergara and far away Antzuola. Oñati is located in the est of Arrasate.
We have a great landscape, with many mountains and forest, apart from the towns, everything is green here, or red and orange in autumn. In the locality of Aretxabaleta, there is a lake called Urkulu, that supply the towns around it. The two highest mountains we have here are Kurtzebarri and Udalaitz (1000m), with a beautiful climb through forest, fields, and rocky zones. The weather here, is quite warm during the year, but of course in winter it is cold and in summer hot. But the most days of the year it is ranning or if it’s not the sky is full of clouds.
One of the most famous towns we have here is Gatzaga, not now, but in the past it was so important. There is a lot of salt, and in the past it was very important. In the past of course, didn’t exist any fridge so the salt was used as conservant. And if there wasn’t salt, the food could decay. So many people, when to Gatzaga to buy the salt. It is under the floor, and they take salt water from a fountain, but nowadays it is not necessary so, the production of salt was stopped. But Gatza was also important, because it was the way to Castilla.
There are some famous people, born in our valley, Jorge fernandez (the host of La ruleta de la fortuna) was born in Arrasate. The brothers and mountain-climbers Alberto and Felix Iñurrategi that were born in Aretxabaleta, but Felix died in the climbing of the Everest. Miss Euskadi 2010 was born in Aretxabaleta too.
